About this course
Part 2 of the German course for Nigerians heading to Germany to work or study, built on the US Foreign Service Institute's German Basic Course recordings, now in the public domain. It follows on from German for Beginners 1. In six lessons you set up a new home, go shopping, plan a trip, get through a working day and hold your own at a social gathering. Every lesson plays real conversations at natural speed in the same consistent voices, then gives you each sentence slowly and clearly so you can listen and repeat, followed by an interactive practice set: listening, typing what you hear, building sentences from word tiles and matching, with mistakes coming back until you get them right. The recordings were made in the 1960s for American diplomats; each lesson says what has changed and how the same moment works for a Nigerian living in Germany today, from renting a flat and registering your address to shopping in euros, working hours and making friends. You finish by recording your own three-scene conversation portfolio.
Welcome back. In the first part you arrived in Germany and made your first phone calls; now you settle in. It is moving day: the Beckers have moved into a house in the suburbs, and their friends the Kellers have come to help. Where is the phone book? Is the heating working? Where do the empty crates go? What are the rents like? By the end you will be able to say where things go and where they are, name rooms and furniture, and ask about the heating and the rent. You also meet this unit's big idea: German chooses between 'stand', 'lie' and 'hang' where English says 'put'.
