The best free courses on the internet, in the right order

Google, Harvard, freeCodeCamp and DeepLearning.AI give away world-class training. The hard part is knowing which ones are worth your data, what order to take them in, and where the word "free" stops being true. This page is our honest map. Every course below is run by somebody else — we simply point you to it, tell you what it really costs, and name the Skillnaija course that covers the Nigerian half those courses will never teach you.

Read this first — what "free" actually means

Free to learn is not the same as free to certify. On Coursera you can almost always audit a course for nothing, which gives you the videos and readings. The graded assignments and the certificate cost money, unless you are granted financial aid. Microsoft and Amazon teach free but charge for the certification exam. We say which is which on every line below.

These are not our courses. Skillnaija is not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with any provider on this page. We cannot issue their certificates, and we cannot fix your account if something goes wrong — that is between you and them. Their prices, content and rules can change at any time.

Watch your data. Video-heavy courses are expensive on a Nigerian data plan. Where a course offers downloads or transcripts, use them, and do the heavy downloading on Wi-Fi.

Finish something. One completed pathway with a project you can show beats nine half-watched courses. Employers ask what you built, not what you enrolled in.

1. Data analysis and machine learning

Start here if you are comfortable with a computer and willing to learn to code. This is the longest pathway on the page and the one with the clearest ladder from beginner to paid work.

Leads to: data analyst, junior data scientist, analytics roles in banks, fintech and telecoms

1

PythonFree

Kaggle Learn · short, hands-on, runs in your browser · free certificate of completion

The fastest honest introduction to Python. Nothing to install, which matters if you are working on a borrowed laptop or a slow connection.

2

PandasFree

Kaggle Learn · the data-handling library every analyst job asks for

Pandas is the actual tool of the job. Do this before any machine learning, because most of real data work is cleaning and reshaping, not modelling.

3

Data VisualisationFree

Kaggle Learn · charts that make a point

The skill that gets you noticed in an interview: turning a table into something a manager understands in five seconds.

4

Machine Learning Crash CourseFree

Google · readings, videos and interactive exercises · no formal certificate

Google's own introduction, and unusually clear on the ideas underneath the code. There is no certificate, so treat it as understanding rather than credential — the understanding is what the interview tests.

5

Intro to Machine LearningFree

Kaggle Learn · build and score your first models

Puts the Google theory into working code, then drops you into Kaggle's competitions where you can practise on real datasets for nothing.

6

Machine Learning SpecializationFree to audit

DeepLearning.AI & Stanford, on Coursera · audit free; certificate paid or via financial aid

Andrew Ng's course is the reference the field grew up on. Audit it for nothing. If you want the certificate, apply for Coursera financial aid before paying — it is routinely granted.

Then add the part they cannot teach you

None of the above knows what a Nigerian employer wants, what the data looks like in a Lagos bank, or how to price the work. Pair this pathway with Data Science & Machine Learning with Python, Data Analysis Foundations and Excel, Google Sheets & Business Dashboards — and note that a great many Nigerian analyst jobs are still won on spreadsheets, not Python.

2. Web development

The pathway with the clearest route to freelance income, because you can sell a website to a real business before you finish learning. Expect months, not weeks.

Leads to: front-end developer, full-stack developer, freelance web work

1

Responsive Web DesignFree

freeCodeCamp · HTML and CSS by building · free certification

freeCodeCamp is a charity, so the whole thing including the certification is genuinely free with no upsell. You build pages from the first hour.

2

JavaScript Algorithms and Data StructuresFree

freeCodeCamp · the language of the web · free certification

The longest step and the one most people quit on. Push through it; everything after depends on it.

3

Back End Development and APIsFree

freeCodeCamp · servers, databases and APIs · free certification

Where you stop making pages and start making software. This is the step that changes what you can charge.

4

The Odin ProjectFree

The Odin Project · a full open-source curriculum, project-heavy

Take this if you finish freeCodeCamp and still do not feel employable. It is harder, closer to how real teams work, and it forces you to build things without being led by the hand.

5

MDN Web Docs — LearnFree

Mozilla · reference and tutorials · no certificate

Not a course so much as the manual the whole industry uses. Bookmark it now and keep it open for the rest of your career.

Then add the part they cannot teach you

Knowing React does not get you paid in Nigeria; finding clients and delivering does. Pair with Full-Stack Web Development, Web Development for Small Business Websites — which is about selling and delivering to Nigerian SMEs — and Freelancing from Nigeria for getting paid across borders.

3. Working with AI

The shortest pathway here, and the one with the best ratio of effort to advantage right now. Most of it needs no coding at all.

Leads to: using AI well in any job, AI-assisted roles, building simple AI products

1

AI for EveryoneFree to audit

DeepLearning.AI, on Coursera · no coding · audit free; certificate paid

The best few hours anyone can spend understanding what AI can and cannot do. Written for managers and ordinary workers, not engineers.

2

Short CoursesFree

DeepLearning.AI · an hour or two each, on their own site · free, no certificate

A growing library of genuinely free short courses on building with AI tools, usually taught with the company that made the tool. Pick the ones that match what you want to build rather than working through them all.

3

Machine Learning Crash CourseFree

Google · optional, for the technically curious

Only if you want to know how the models actually work. You can build a great deal with AI without ever taking this.

Then add the part they cannot teach you

Pair with AI Prompting, AI for Work & Business, Agentic AI and AI Training & Data Labelling — the last of which is about actually earning from AI-data platforms from Nigeria, which no foreign course covers.

4. Cloud and IT support

The most direct route into a formal tech job without learning to program. Be warned: this is the pathway where certificates cost real money, and the exams are priced in dollars.

Leads to: IT support, cloud support, systems administration, data centre roles

1

Google SkillsPartly free

Google · Google's learning platform, formerly Cloud Skills Boost · free and paid content

Google Cloud's own training. A real amount is free, including introductory paths and some hands-on labs, while deeper tracks sit behind a subscription. Start with the free paths and see if the work suits you.

2

Microsoft LearnFree to learn

Microsoft · learning paths free; certification exams are paid

One of the largest free training libraries anywhere, and Azure skills are in demand with Nigerian employers and outsourcing firms. The learning costs nothing; the exam does.

3

AWS Skill BuilderFree tier

Amazon Web Services · free digital courses; labs and exams paid

Worth it if the employers you are targeting run on AWS. Check their job adverts before choosing between this and Microsoft — do not learn both at once.

4

Cisco Networking AcademyPartly free

Cisco · several free self-paced courses, including networking basics

Networking is the part of IT support people skip and then fail interviews on. Cisco's introductory courses are free and are taught in institutions across Nigeria.

Then add the part they cannot teach you

Pair with Cybersecurity Foundations and Data Centre Technician, which covers the physical, power and cooling side of the job as it is actually done in Nigerian facilities — including working around unreliable grid power.

5. Digital marketing

The fastest pathway to billable work, because a small business will pay for results long before it asks about your qualifications. Most certificates here are genuinely free.

Leads to: social media manager, digital marketer, freelance marketing for SMEs

1

Google SkillshopFree

Google · Ads, Analytics and more · free certifications

Google's own training on its own products, with free certifications that agencies actually recognise. The Analytics and Ads certifications are the two worth having.

2

Inbound MarketingFree

HubSpot Academy · free course and free certification

Teaches the strategy behind the tools: how to attract customers rather than interrupt them. HubSpot's certifications are free and widely recognised.

3

Canva Design SchoolFree

Canva · short design tutorials

Unglamorous but practical: most Nigerian social media work is judged on whether the graphics look professional. Canva is what the job actually uses.

Then add the part they cannot teach you

Google will teach you Google Ads; nobody there will tell you how Nigerian SMEs actually buy, or how to price a retainer in naira. Pair with Digital Marketing Essentials, Social Media Management and SEO for Beginners.

6. Computer science foundations

For people who want to understand computing properly rather than only use it. Harder than the other pathways and worth it if you intend to go far.

Leads to: software engineering, and a much stronger footing in every other pathway here

1

CS50x — Introduction to Computer ScienceFree, paid option

Harvard University · free to take, with a free CS50 certificate; the edX verified certificate is paid

Widely considered the best introductory computing course in the world, and Harvard gives it away. It is demanding — expect to struggle — and it will make everything else easier.

2

GitHub SkillsFree

GitHub · short interactive exercises in your own repositories

Version control is the thing self-taught developers most often lack and every employer assumes. A few hours here removes a real objection to hiring you.

3

Khan AcademyFree

Khan Academy · maths from arithmetic upward · free, non-profit

If the maths in CS50 or the machine learning pathway defeats you, the problem is usually a gap from school rather than ability. Fix it here. Nobody needs to know you did.

Then add the part they cannot teach you

Pair with JavaScript for Beginners and Git & GitHub for Beginners if you would rather start in your own language before taking on CS50 in C.

The other half of the job is local

Every course on this page is excellent and none of it knows what a Nigerian employer asks, what a contract here looks like, or how you get paid across a border. That is the half we build — 200+ courses, all free, all written for Nigeria.
