What you will submit
A live Firebase Hosting URL OR a public GitHub repo link for a working app that has user login, a Firestore read/write feature scoped to the logged-in user, and Security Rules locking data to its owner — plus a short README.
What to do, step by step
- Create a Firebase project on the free Spark plan, register a web app, and wire its config into an index.html page using initializeApp — confirm the connection in the browser Console as shown in Lesson 1.
- Add Firebase Authentication with at least one working method (Email/Password or Google sign-in), and use onAuthStateChanged so the page shows a logged-in view to signed-in users and a login form to guests.
- Build one real Firestore feature where a logged-in user can WRITE data and READ it back — for example a notes list, a guestbook, or a feedback wall — and stamp every document with the owner's uid (auth.currentUser.uid) as taught in Lesson 3.
- Write Security Rules so users can only read and write their OWN documents (the request.auth.uid == resource.data.owner pattern from Lesson 5), and test in the Rules Playground that a logged-out or different user is denied — do NOT leave it in test mode.
- Deploy the app to Firebase Hosting with firebase deploy so it has a real live link, and write a short README explaining what it does, which Firebase features it uses, and how the data is secured.
- Submit your live Firebase Hosting URL (e.g. https://yourapp.web.app) or a public GitHub repo link containing the code and README.

| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Authentication works — a user can sign up/log in, and onAuthStateChanged correctly switches between logged-in and guest views | 25% |
| Firestore read AND write both function — a logged-in user can save data and see it read back, with documents stamped by the owner's uid | 25% |
| Security Rules restrict data to its owner (not left in test mode), demonstrably denying a logged-out or different user | 25% |
| The app is genuinely deployed and reachable at a live Firebase Hosting link (or a complete, runnable repo) | 15% |
| Clear README explaining what the app does, which Firebase features it uses, and how the data is secured | 10% |
You need 65% overall to pass. A failed submission comes back with feedback and can be revised and resubmitted.
Before you submit: make your link public
If your work lives in Google Drive or Google Docs, open Share → General access and change “Restricted” to “Anyone with the link” (Viewer). Then paste the link into a private browser window: if it opens without sign-in, you are ready. A private link cannot be graded — it is the single most common reason a good project fails.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to finish Firebase for Real Projects before submitting the project?
Yes. The submission screen opens once every lesson in Firebase for Real Projects is marked complete. The lessons are where the methods, the Nigerian context and the worked examples the project depends on are taught.
How is the project graded?
An examiner scores each rubric criterion from 0 to 100 and weights them as shown on this page; you need 65% overall to pass. Most submissions are graded within minutes and you get written feedback on what was strong and what to improve.
Can I resubmit if I fail?
Yes. A failed project comes back with feedback; revise the weak parts and resubmit. A passed project is final — the certificate is issued and cannot be re-rolled.
What do I actually submit?
A write-up of what you did (under 5,000 characters) plus a public link to your work — a Google Drive folder, Google Doc, spreadsheet, GitHub repository or video. The link must open without sign-in; a private link cannot be graded. The free project workbook on this page walks you through all 6 steps.
Is the certificate real?
Yes. Passing this project issues a certificate with a unique verification code. Anyone — an employer, a client, a school — can open the verification page and see that the certificate is genuine and which project earned it.
