About this course
Oil and gas pays Nigeria's best accounting salaries because its books are unlike anyone else's: two currencies at once, joint ventures funded by monthly cash calls, revenue that arrives as a cargo of crude rather than an invoice, costs that sit under IFRS 6 instead of ordinary capex rules, and a tax stack that runs to a 60% headline rate. This course teaches the part that is specific to the industry, assuming you already know debits, credits and a trial balance. You will learn to check a cash call against a joint operating agreement, work an overlift and underlift, read a PSC cost oil and profit oil waterfall, revalue dollar books into naira, review a contractor invoice with withholding tax and VAT on foreign services, build royalty and hydrocarbon tax schedules under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, handle crude stock and depot product, survive a joint venture audit, and walk into an interview at an operator, an indigenous producer or a service company knowing the words the job actually uses.
A friend of yours keeps the books at a bakery in Yaba. Flour comes in with an invoice, bread goes out with a receipt, and at month-end the numbers are in naira and the story is simple. Then you take a job at an oil company in Victoria Island and on your first morning you are handed a document called a cash call, in dollars, asking your employer to send $1.8 million to a company it does not own, for work it will not do itself, on a field it holds only 40% of. Nothing in that sentence is in the bakery's world. This lesson explains what industry you have walked into, who the players and the regulators are, which of them hires accounting assistants, and the five specific things that make these books unlike any other set of books in Nigeria.
