What you will submit

One spreadsheet (Google Sheets shared with view access, or an uploaded Excel file) with a clearly labelled tab for each of the six parts, formulas visible in the cells, and the Part 6 memo either on its own tab or in a linked document.

What to do, step by step

  1. You are the accounting assistant at Delta Crest Energy Limited, a Nigerian indigenous producer. It holds a 40% participating interest in the Ubima joint venture (operator: Meridian Oil Nigeria Limited, 60%) over an onshore Petroleum Mining Lease, and its books are kept in US dollars with naira reporting. Work the month of March. Build one spreadsheet with a tab for each part below, and show your workings in the cells rather than typing only answers.
  2. Part 1 — Cash call check: the operator's March cash call asks Delta Crest for $1,840,000. The approved March budget was $4,200,000 (of which $600,000 was for a workover that has been deferred to May, with no approved AFE), and the operator has added $95,000 described as 'head office support' that the joint operating agreement does not permit to be charged to the venture. Compute what Delta Crest should actually pay, list every adjustment with a one-line reason, and state which document you would ask the operator for before releasing payment.
  3. Part 2 — Lifting revenue: Delta Crest's March entitlement was 96,000 barrels. It lifted one cargo of 110,000 barrels on 24 March. The provisional invoice used $71.40 per barrel; the final price settled at $72.05. Compute the revenue to recognise for March, the overlift or underlift position in barrels and dollars, the provisional-to-final price adjustment, and say plainly which side of the balance sheet the overlift sits on and why it is not simply extra revenue.
  4. Part 3 — Contractor invoices: review three invoices and say, for each, the amount payable, the withholding tax to deduct, the VAT treatment, and any document you would demand before it is passed for payment. (a) Rivers Wireline Services Limited, a Nigerian company, $240,000 for wireline services, with 10% retention per the contract and no field tickets attached. (b) Norsk Subsea AS, a Norwegian company with no Nigerian office, $500,000 for subsea engineering performed partly offshore Nigeria and partly in Stavanger, with no split stated. (c) Ubima Community Logistics Limited, $18,000 for 'miscellaneous site services', supported by one handwritten note, on a purchase order raised the day after the work.
  5. Part 4 — FX revaluation: the dollar ledger holds a payable of $500,000 and a naira bank balance of ₦412,000,000. The rate moved from ₦1,498 per dollar at 28 February to ₦1,562 per dollar at 31 March. Revalue the monetary items, compute the exchange difference, and state where it goes and which of the two balances is a monetary item that must be revalued.
  6. Part 5 — Fiscal schedules: on the March entitlement revenue from Part 2, compute the royalty at the rate that applies to an onshore Petroleum Mining Lease, and build a one-page schedule showing how Delta Crest's chargeable profit would flow to hydrocarbon tax and to companies income tax. Name the rates you use, state whether the 4% development levy applies to the hydrocarbon-tax profits and why, and compute the 1% Nigerian Content Development Fund levy on the Part 3 contracts.
  7. Part 6 — Close checklist and a memo: write a month-end close checklist of at least ten items in the order you would do them, marking which need the operator, which need a regulator's number and which you can finish alone. Then write a memo of 150 to 250 words to your finance manager on the single largest risk you found this month and what you recommend.

How it is graded

CriterionWeight
Cash call adjustments are correct and each one cites the reason it is disallowed or deferred18%
Lifting revenue follows entitlement, and the overlift is treated as a liability rather than revenue20%
Contractor invoices are reviewed for withholding tax, VAT on foreign services, retention and missing evidence20%
FX revaluation covers only monetary items and the exchange difference is correctly placed12%
Royalty, hydrocarbon tax, companies income tax, the development levy point and the 1% levy are computed with the rates named18%
The close checklist is sequenced sensibly and the memo names a real risk with a usable recommendation12%

You need 65% overall to pass. A failed submission comes back with feedback and can be revised and resubmitted.

Before you submit: make your link public

If your work lives in Google Drive or Google Docs, open Share → General access and change “Restricted” to “Anyone with the link” (Viewer). Then paste the link into a private browser window: if it opens without sign-in, you are ready. A private link cannot be graded — it is the single most common reason a good project fails.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to finish Oil & Gas Accounting Assistant (Nigeria) before submitting the project?

Yes. The submission screen opens once every lesson in Oil & Gas Accounting Assistant (Nigeria) is marked complete. The lessons are where the methods, the Nigerian context and the worked examples the project depends on are taught.

How is the project graded?

An examiner scores each rubric criterion from 0 to 100 and weights them as shown on this page; you need 65% overall to pass. Most submissions are graded within minutes and you get written feedback on what was strong and what to improve.

Can I resubmit if I fail?

Yes. A failed project comes back with feedback; revise the weak parts and resubmit. A passed project is final — the certificate is issued and cannot be re-rolled.

What do I actually submit?

A write-up of what you did (under 5,000 characters) plus a public link to your work — a Google Drive folder, Google Doc, spreadsheet, GitHub repository or video. The link must open without sign-in; a private link cannot be graded. The free project workbook on this page walks you through all 7 steps.

Is the certificate real?

Yes. Passing this project issues a certificate with a unique verification code. Anyone — an employer, a client, a school — can open the verification page and see that the certificate is genuine and which project earned it.
