About this course

Every community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, wholesaler and patent medicine shop in Nigeria runs on assistants who serve the counter, keep the shelves and the fridge, receive stock, keep the records and know exactly when to call the pharmacist. Almost nobody is trained for it, and the rules are strict, because medicines can harm. This course teaches the job from the first day. You will learn what a pharmacy assistant may and may never do, how the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, NAFDAC and the NDLEA regulate the shop and what an inspection looks for, how medicines are classified and how to read a label without ever recommending a dose, how to serve customers kindly and refer every clinical question to the pharmacist, how to support dispensing without doing the pharmacist's checks, how to order, receive and store stock including the cold chain through power cuts, how to spot fake and substandard medicines and what to do about them, why controlled drugs, codeine syrups, tramadol and antibiotics are handled the way they are, how expired medicines are quarantined and disposed of and how adverse reactions are reported, how sales, money and patient records are kept, what hygiene and premises rules apply, and the routes to becoming a pharmacy technician or a licensed vendor. Every lesson follows a new assistant at a fictional Kaduna pharmacy. It is education about the job and its rules, never clinical training, and it never recommends a medicine. Free, like every Skillnaija course.

Fatima Abdullahi, 21, starts at Divine Grace Pharmacy on Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna, on a Monday morning in September. She has a white coat, a name tag and no idea what the job is. Within an hour a woman at the counter asks which of two children's syrups is 'stronger', a man asks for 'the injection for malaria', a wholesaler's driver arrives with eleven cartons and a delivery note, and the fridge alarm beeps because NEPA has just gone. Pharm. Yusuf Danladi, the superintendent pharmacist, is with a patient in the consulting corner. Fatima wants to help everyone at once. Mr Obi, the pharmacy technician, gives her the one sentence that will run through this whole course: 'You serve, you stock, you record, and you call the pharmacist. He decides.'
