What you will submit
One spreadsheet (Google Sheets shared with view access, or an uploaded Excel file) with a clearly labelled tab for each of the six parts, formulas visible, and the Part 6 memo on its own tab or in a linked document.
What to do, step by step
- You are the accounting assistant at Kano Ridge Construction Limited, a Nigerian contractor with three live jobs. Work the month of June and build one spreadsheet with a tab per part, showing your workings in the cells rather than typing only answers. Use ₦ throughout and state any assumption you make.
- Part 1 — Work in progress: build a WIP schedule for the three contracts and say, for each, the percentage complete on a cost-to-cost basis, the revenue earned to date, and whether it is over-billed or under-billed and by how much. (A) Federal Secretariat annexe: contract value ₦840,000,000; costs to date ₦357,000,000; estimated cost to complete ₦273,000,000; billed to date ₦420,000,000. (B) Lekki warehouse: contract value ₦1,250,000,000; costs to date ₦880,000,000; estimated cost to complete ₦520,000,000; billed to date ₦910,000,000. (C) Kaduna road rehabilitation: contract value ₦480,000,000; costs to date ₦96,000,000; estimated cost to complete ₦312,000,000; billed to date ₦72,000,000. For each contract state which balance sheet line the over- or under-billing sits on and why.
- Part 2 — The loss-making contract: one of the three contracts above is heading for a loss. Identify it, compute the total expected loss on the contract, state how much of that loss must be recognised this month and under which standard, and write the journal entry. Explain in two sentences why the answer is not simply to spread the loss over the remaining months.
- Part 3 — Progress valuation: prepare June's payment application for contract A. Measured work completed in June is ₦119,000,000; materials properly stored on site but not yet built in are ₦14,000,000; there is an approved variation of ₦9,500,000 for additional foundation work and an unapproved claim of ₦22,000,000 for three weeks of delay caused by the client. Retention is 10% capped at 5% of the contract value. Show the gross valuation, retention withheld, the amount you would certify, the withholding tax the client will deduct at the resident construction rate, and the net cash you expect. State clearly how you treat the unapproved claim in the valuation and, separately, in the accounts.
- Part 4 — Subcontractor payment: a subcontractor invoices ₦46,000,000 for blockwork, of which ₦12,000,000 is materials. The subcontract has 5% retention and back-to-back payment terms. Compute the payment due, the retention held and the withholding tax to deduct, and list the documents you require before releasing payment. Then explain in three sentences how this payment would differ if the same job were in the United Kingdom under the Construction Industry Scheme.
- Part 5 — Cash flow: build a six-month cash-flow forecast for contract A from July to December, assuming it completes in November, monthly certified work of roughly ₦120,000,000, the client pays 60 days after certification, subcontractors are paid 30 days after their valuation, retention is released half at practical completion and half twelve months later, and cement rises 8% in September. Show the lowest cash point, state the month it occurs, and say how much working capital the contract needs at that point.
- Part 6 — Compliance and risk memo: write 250 to 400 words to your finance manager covering (a) which tender compliance certificates the company must hold current and what each one needs, (b) the single biggest risk you found in Parts 1 to 5, and (c) three site cost controls you would introduce, with the specific loss each one prevents.

| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| The WIP schedule computes percentage complete, revenue earned and over- or under-billing correctly for all three contracts | 22% |
| The loss-making contract is identified and the full expected loss is recognised immediately, with the standard named and the journal given | 18% |
| The progress valuation handles materials on site, the variation, retention and withholding tax, and treats the unapproved claim conservatively | 20% |
| The subcontractor payment is correct on retention and withholding tax, lists the documents required, and the UK CIS comparison is accurate | 14% |
| The cash-flow forecast reflects the payment lags and retention release and identifies the lowest cash point and working capital need | 16% |
| The memo names the right compliance certificates, a real risk, and three specific, useful site controls | 10% |
You need 65% overall to pass. A failed submission comes back with feedback and can be revised and resubmitted.
Before you submit: make your link public
If your work lives in Google Drive or Google Docs, open Share → General access and change “Restricted” to “Anyone with the link” (Viewer). Then paste the link into a private browser window: if it opens without sign-in, you are ready. A private link cannot be graded — it is the single most common reason a good project fails.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to finish Construction Accounting Assistant (Nigeria & Global) before submitting the project?
Yes. The submission screen opens once every lesson in Construction Accounting Assistant (Nigeria & Global) is marked complete. The lessons are where the methods, the Nigerian context and the worked examples the project depends on are taught.
How is the project graded?
An examiner scores each rubric criterion from 0 to 100 and weights them as shown on this page; you need 65% overall to pass. Most submissions are graded within minutes and you get written feedback on what was strong and what to improve.
Can I resubmit if I fail?
Yes. A failed project comes back with feedback; revise the weak parts and resubmit. A passed project is final — the certificate is issued and cannot be re-rolled.
What do I actually submit?
A write-up of what you did (under 5,000 characters) plus a public link to your work — a Google Drive folder, Google Doc, spreadsheet, GitHub repository or video. The link must open without sign-in; a private link cannot be graded. The free project workbook on this page walks you through all 7 steps.
Is the certificate real?
Yes. Passing this project issues a certificate with a unique verification code. Anyone — an employer, a client, a school — can open the verification page and see that the certificate is genuine and which project earned it.
