What you will submit

The .pbix file (uploaded or via a view-access cloud link) plus one document with screenshots, the DAX measures, and the notes for each part.

What to do, step by step

  1. Using the practice files (sales.csv, products.csv, customers.csv, branches.csv, staff.csv), build a Power BI report for the general manager covering January 2025 to August 2026. Submit the .pbix file plus a short document with screenshots and the notes asked for below. If you cannot upload the .pbix, a shared link to it in Google Drive or OneDrive with view access is fine.
  2. Part 1. Power Query: import all five files, and in Power Query set correct data types, rename columns in plain English, handle the refund rows (keep them, with a clear Refund flag), and add a Sale Month column. Include a screenshot of the Applied Steps for the sales query and one sentence on why the cleaning belongs here rather than in a formula.
  3. Part 2. Model: build a star schema with sales as the fact table and products, customers, branches, staff and a date table as dimensions. Mark the date table. Show the model view with relationships and their directions, and explain in three sentences why a date table is needed and why relationships are one-to-many from dimensions to the fact.
  4. Part 3. Measures: create at least eight DAX measures in a Measures table, including Total Sales (excluding refunds), Total Refunds, Net Sales, Invoice Count, Average Invoice Value, Gross Margin and Margin percent using DIVIDE, Sales Same Period Last Year, and Month-over-Month change. Format all currency measures as naira. Paste the DAX in the document.
  5. Part 4. Report pages: at least three pages: Overview (KPI cards, a monthly trend, sales by branch), Products (category and product performance with a drill-through page or drill-down), Customers and Credit (customer types, top customers, outstanding credit with conditional formatting). Every page needs a date slicer and a branch slicer that stay in sync. Explain your choice of visual for two of the charts.
  6. Part 5. Interactivity and design: add a bookmark or toggle, a custom tooltip page, a consistent colour theme, and titles that read as sentences (for example, Net sales rose 12 percent in December). Check the report on a phone-sized layout or explain what you would change for one.
  7. Part 6. Publish plan and hand-over: describe how you would publish this to the Power BI service, which workspace and licence would be needed, how scheduled refresh would work when the CSVs are replaced by a database, and a row-level security rule that lets each branch manager see only their own branch (include the DAX filter). Add a half-page hand-over note a new analyst could use.

The model is a proper star schema with a marked date table and correct one-to-many relationships18%
The DAX measures are correct, including time intelligence and DIVIDE, and formatted as naira20%
The report pages answer the questions with well-chosen visuals, synced slicers and a working drill-through20%

The publish plan is realistic on workspaces, licences and refresh, the RLS filter is correct, and the hand-over note is usable15%

You need 65% overall to pass. A failed submission comes back with feedback and can be revised and resubmitted.

Before you submit: make your link public

If your work lives in Google Drive or Google Docs, open Share → General access and change “Restricted” to “Anyone with the link” (Viewer). Then paste the link into a private browser window: if it opens without sign-in, you are ready. A private link cannot be graded — it is the single most common reason a good project fails.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to finish Power BI: Dashboards Managers Actually Use before submitting the project?

Yes. The submission screen opens once every lesson in Power BI: Dashboards Managers Actually Use is marked complete. The lessons are where the methods, the Nigerian context and the worked examples the project depends on are taught.

How is the project graded?

An examiner scores each rubric criterion from 0 to 100 and weights them as shown on this page; you need 65% overall to pass. Most submissions are graded within minutes and you get written feedback on what was strong and what to improve.

Can I resubmit if I fail?

Yes. A failed project comes back with feedback; revise the weak parts and resubmit. A passed project is final — the certificate is issued and cannot be re-rolled.

What do I actually submit?

A write-up of what you did (under 5,000 characters) plus a public link to your work — a Google Drive folder, Google Doc, spreadsheet, GitHub repository or video. The link must open without sign-in; a private link cannot be graded. The free project workbook on this page walks you through all 7 steps.

Is the certificate real?

Yes. Passing this project issues a certificate with a unique verification code. Anyone — an employer, a client, a school — can open the verification page and see that the certificate is genuine and which project earned it.
